I recently had a medical emergency that led to a four day stay in the hospital. When the EMT folks arrived, my blood pressure was 70/40 (not good). After undergoing just about every medical diagnostic test ever devised, the doctors were able to eliminate many of the major causes including heart failure, stroke, blood clots in my lungs or legs, kidney failure, and cancer.
Nevertheless, there was significant internal bleeding and my kidneys and other vital organs were shutting down (again, not good). Thankfully, the doctors did finally determine that the bleeding was caused by a form of Ischemic Colitis, probably brought on by dehydration. A week later, I'm doing great and being careful to drink plenty of water.
One of the doctors explained to Linda (my wife and my primary care nurse) and me that when our body is under stress from low blood flow, our body automatically prioritizes by allocating more blood and needed oxygen to the most vital organs like the brain and heart. Amazingly, our bodies have been created with the ability to independently diagnose and adjust as needed. And this is true not only with the circulatory system, but also all of the many complex bodily systems that second by second keep our bodies alive and functioning.
I said to the doctor, "Wow! Our bodies truly are fearfully and wonderfully made by God!" He quickly changed the subject and left the room. But God is so good and my soul knows it very well! Maranatha!
